It's been a whirlwind week filled with a ton of work and so many good things; I apologize for my absence the last few days. It's nice to have a moment to just relax and count my four leaf clovers.

Like a late blooming orchid, I'm here this morning, a bit tardy but ready to indulge your senses!

Orchids have burst on the fashion scene for spring; amidst the rampage of florals they stand out as the most elegant, narcotic, and coveted.

I was far from immune; the orchid-inspired colors from my new 4FREE Beachcomber Trio are my favorite colors for spring!

But when it comes to actually tending to orchids, I did not inherit my mother's magic touch. Hers bloom, cascade and replicate...while mine tend to be not long for this world, which is why I found Charlotte Moss' recent piece for the Wall Street Journal so interesting. Along with a round up detailing some of the season's loveliest orchids in home and fashion, there's also a step by step explanation of how to care for your orchids.

So tell me, do you have an orchid green thumb?

Like almost every girl I know, I could not resist the mint temptation of SS12--so deliciously perfect with the pastel candy hued pinks and yellows of spring, and the sorbet colored dresses of summer...My new SS12 bags featured in today's collage are named for Crystal Cove, one of the most stunning stretches of beach running alongside the Pacific Coast Highway which separates Laguna Beach from Newport Beach. On an given golden afternoon, the water glitters with shades of seafoam and mint--hence the name 'Crystal Cove'. It captured my heart back when I was first learning to drive and would spend vacations here with my family--I'd sneak away to shop at Fashion Island and feel like a character right out of The Great Gatsby because the drive was so beautifully decadent. All these years later, it never ceases to strike me with its beauty.

Most of the bags have arrived in our shop {www.shop.maryjomatsumoto.com} so if you have a chance, please wander in! There are also couple of new 4FREE Nail Color trios to tempt you in all the shades of SS12. In the near future, there will be a selection of new Bridal Bags and a rainbow of  patent clutches arriving in time for wedding/party season along with a few select Spring/Summer pieces from out clothing line. It's been a busy week, so I'm signing off for the weekend early--wishing you a very blissful one!

p.s. some photos of our new Crystal Cove photos published earlier this morning by mistake--I know a lot of people left comments, so thank you for that!

kenny-scharfbearjungle

It's hard to think of the 1980s East Village art scene without thinking of Kenny Scharf, who rose to fame alongside his friends Jean-Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring. One of the first artists to infuse elements of street culture into main stream contemporary art, Scharf's pop surrealistic paintings use ads, cartoons and classic Americana to create bright and "fun" surfaces with deeper themes to be explored if you look further into the paintings. A long time environmentalist, Scharf's work constantly touches on the demise of the planet.Click here for a short video interview with Kenny Scharf and here for an interview by Dennis Hopper with Kenny Scharf.

Today's art inspired fashions draw on the pop colors of Scharf's Bear Jungle, a timely influence as neon chartreuse and deep purple begin to surface for SS12.

I've been mostly absent from your blogs the past week or two and I apologize. It's been crunch time here and we're at the tail end of our new bag production that includes 3 large shoppers, 5 soft totes, 3 oversized clutches, 2 small clutches, 2 bowlers, and a slew of new key fobs, plus a few more summer add-ons and many more styles in the works for Fall 12. It feels so good to finally have things at a place where I'll be able to show you.

We'll be shooting the bags over the weekend with my friend and favorite lovely model Katie, who recently has been doubling as my cruel task-master in some sort of fusion core/pilates/yoga torture that passes as "spring training." Ha. So between being sore and tired, there hasn't been much time to read blogs, but I miss my daily dose and plan to stop by this weekend!

Can't wait to stop by your blogs and say hello! Have a wonderful weekend!

This week's art inspired fashion post in some ways rounds out the trinity of the 1980s New York art scene as our last two art-inspired posts were devoted to Keith Haring's friends
Jean Michel Basquiat and Kenny Scharf.

keith_haring

With instantly recognizable simple bold lines and active figures, Keith Haring became one of the most well known artists in the world, devoting a great deal of time to public works that often carry social messages. Haring was experimenting with many different mediums before he began creating hundreds of drawings in white chalk on the unused black paper panels throughout the NYC subway system. He would produce up to 40 'subway drawings' in a day, and as his rapid rhythmic drawings became familiar to New York commuters, he began a meteoric rise to fame for a brief but intense career that spanned the 1980s.  Keith Haring’s work was featured in over 100 solo and group exhibitions before he died at the age of 31 from AIDS.

keith_popshop

Criticized by many in the art world for opening the Pop Shop, a retail store in Soho that sold t-shirts, toys, and magnets bearing his images, Haring was committed to making his artwork accessible to a wider audience, and received encouragement and support from his mentor Andy Warhol and thousands of fans. In many ways this concept was the precursor for the melding of art and fashion, and for this reason along with many others, I will always be a big fan.

What do you think about the merging of art and fashion?

p.s. The Keith Haring Foundation scanned his journals and will be posting a page a day during the current Brooklyn Museum retrospective which runs March 16 - July 8, 2012. You can view Keith Haring's journal pages on the Keith Haring Tumblr - so amazing to see how his work evolved!

Good morning and happy Monday!

carmelshopper

As promised, some of my new bag collection has arrived in our shop! Out of the 16+ bags in our new collection, the Thalia Street bags have been going faster than I could keep the sample line together, so I thought it best to put them in our shop first. My parents have had a home in Laguna Beach most of my life, but it wasn't until I moved to Laguna 3 years ago that I started spending more  time in and around Thalia Street. The life here is so different than the other places where I've lived, and I hope that I've captured some of the laid back luxe feel that I like to carry with me when I'm back in the city.

Stay tuned, there are 13 or so more bags that are making their way into the shop in the next few days along with {surprise!} a few new clothing pieces for spring and summer.

art inspired: roy lichtenstein, interior with skyline

Who doesn't think of the iconic Girl with Ball when they think of Roy Lichtenstein? Or his giant Benday dot comic paintings dripping with irony? Roy Lichtenstein launched the Pop Art movement of the 1960s by bringing advertisements and comic-strips into the world of fine art. His instantly recognizable flat style and colors drenched in midcentury sensibility couldn't be more spot on for what's happening in fashion.

Roy-Lichtenstein-Interior-with-Skyline-167212

The reason I chose Lichtenstein's Interior with Skyline for this week's art inspired fashion post is partially because it reminds me of Don Draper's new Manhattan apartment--and if you caught Mad Men's season kick off this week, then you're probably humming Zou Bisou Bisou as I type. When you think of midcentury, it usually brings up thoughts of Eames Lounge chairs or a Naguchi coffee table, but seen everywhere from Prada's splashy flames for Spring to the consumate Jil Sander Fall 2012 collection worthy of a January Jones entrance, midcentury has become one of fashion's biggest trends.

p.s. Our Newport Harbor bags are making their way into the shop and were designed to have a bit of midcentury sensibility.

Details: Marc by Marc Jacobs Polka Dot shirt, $230;  Miu Miu Cat Eye Sunglasses, $390; Nixon Navy Watch, $495; Jil Sander Yellow Ballet Shoes, $425; Chloe Straight-leg twillpants, $615; Mary Jo Matsumoto Avalon Anchor Tassel Key Fob, $76; Mary Jo Matsumoto Newport Harbor Oversized Clutch, $452; Diane von Furstenberg Tweed Jacket, $865.

Are you adding midcentury flair to your wardrobe this spring?

Today I'm really excited to introduce Shannon of Style Diary Of A Fashion Fanatic as this week's Eye on Style guest! I'm constantly looking at hundreds of style and fashion blogs, and Shannon definitely stands out as one of my favorites because she has her own inimitable style and isn't afraid to mix vintage and haute couture with a big dash of rock 'n roll. She has one of the most enviable Chanel collections of any blogger I have yet to meet and is so sweet you can't even begrudge her those Birkens, CC logoed booties or Isabel Marant pieces that have me drooling. I think you'll enjoy meeting Shannon!

Photobucket

name: Shannon Dawn

occupation: Fashion Blogger

location: St. Louis area

wearing: Vintage black leather biker jacket from Spanish Moss, Ralph Lauren Black Label skirt, Chanel earrings, Alexander Wang tee, a pair of my husband's Bolle sunglasses, MIISTA boots, Chanel bag, Cartier, David Yurman & Baccarat rings...

favorite designers: Balmain, (it's so edgy and has a rock n roll vibe), Hermes, (a timeless classic that never dates. My husband gave me a rouge leather Birkin bag as a gift in 2001; I carry it often. I also love the Kelly bags, Collier de Chien cuffs, and various Hermes & enamel bracelets). Chanel (I love pairing the tweed jackets with distressed, ripped jeans and Doc Martens. I'll wear the Chanel chain belts as necklaces & as belts. The handbags are amazing. My favorite is the limited edition bag I received for Christmas. The first Chanel bag I bought was the 2.55 in black with gold hardware about ten years ago. I purchased a pair of Chanel ankle boots from the spring/summer '12 collection that are white lace trimmed with black lace, open toe & have black satin heels and studded crystal CC logo on the back of the heel). Isabel Marant, (the embroidered track jacket is fabulous and those fringe boots - LOVE!!!) L.A.M.B. clothing is another favorite!!! (My friend owns a boutique in Chicago and carries lots of L.A.M.B. She is the one that really introduced me to the L.A.M.B. line and I buy lots of separates from her. It's very fashion forward and unique. The blazers are works of art and my favorite coat is a long, black & white houndstooth style I pair with a wide, black leather, studded belt).

Cynthia Rowley, Anna Sui, Rebecca Taylor, Topshop, American Gold, Haute Hippie, Winter Kate, & Catherine Malandrino are also favorite designers of mine.

Vintage clothing is a MAJOR part of my wardrobe too!! My newest purchases are a vintage Yohji Yamamoto jacket, a vintage Searle black boucle coat with black Mongolian trimmed fur collar and cuffs, & a Nan Duskin vintage 1960's multicolor silk embroidered coat. I love mixing vintage and current clothing together. I never wear a whole designer "look" head to toe - I want to put my own spin on an outfit.

what style means to Shannon: I feel like style is an expression of myself. I remember as a four year old going through my closet and creating outfits; I had so much fun! I feel that when I put an outfit together it's a mini creation. Style definitely can't be bought!!!

I would always send my Aunt Sue, a fellow fashion fanatic, photos of outfits I'd wear to an event, party, or even out to dinner with my husband. She told me to start a blog and share my love of fashion with others.

Mary Jo: Brava Shannon, you have done your Aunt Sue proud! Just reading about your wardrobe makes me sigh with satisfaction!

Heading into our 7th year of blogging, it's easy to forget that there's new people just finding TrustYourStyle. So when I posed the question yesterday, "What do you think about the merging of art and fashion," I had a moment of surprise when I realized that some of the comments came from first-time visitors!

Mary Jo & Clayton Brothers

Mary Jo Matsumoto Artist Editions: Works on Couture; Stephen Cohen Gallery, Los Angeles

In case you haven't been following, yesterday's post on Keith Haring was our 41st art-inspired fashion post. Mostly this weekly post sprang from the 5 artists who have all shown in major museums, that I licensed last year for my Women's Couture line. And that in turn, was inspired by my dear friend Ron Keyson, who after working for Murakami and Damien Hirst, was one of the first to license some of the world's major art stars for wallpaper. He mentored and advised me all through the process at least on the art end, and that amazing experience causes me to think of him every time I post an art-inspired fashion post. The last three weeks especially have made me think of Ron, who passed away a few months ago, since they were devoted to artists that were big in the 1980s NYC art scene; a time he lived through, and when I arrived on the tail end of it, we became friends.

I know he would have loved how the merging of fashion and art is becoming more mainstream every day. I think visual social media makes this collusion even more accessible, with tools like Instagram, Tumblr, and Pinterest, that give rise to all sorts of mixing and melding. In fact, while it's far from high art, I was pretty blown away to see that people have been incorporating my 4FREE Nail Color line into some fun collages on Polyvore.

art inspired: tamara de lempicka: kizette on the balcony

Today's Art Inspired Fashion post looks to Tamara de Lempika, a bohemian socialite who is one of the most memorable artists of the 1920s "Arts Decoratifs" or Art Deco style. After showing her first 28 paintings, she quickly became one of the most fashionable portrait painters of her generation among the haute bourgeoisie, painting socialites and titled patrons. Even now, her work is collected by celebrities like Madonna, Jack Nicholson and Barbara Streisand. This painting was originally titled "Girl On Balcony" and few people at the time realized that Tamara had a daughter Kizette, or that her daughter was her model.

Talk about trusting your style! Tamara de Lempicka is the poster girl for a modern creative and independent life filled with beautiful clothes, travel and riches.

Photobucket

Among a hundred paintings, you could recognize mine,
my goal was:
Do not copy. Create a new style,...
colors light and bright,
return to elegance in my models."

Tamara de Lempicka is one of the more fascinating artist stories; she lived a life that's still relevant and modern in many ways. With all the buzz about Baz Luhrmann's 3-D remake of The Great Gatsby on the horizon {it won't debut until Christmas 2012} and plenty of glitzy 20s drop waist dresses hitting the scene, it seems inevitable that art deco/flapper style is only going to gain fashion momentum in the coming months.

Here's our take on an updated easy breezy Easter/Lempicka inspired outfit:

art inspired: erté: wings of victory

I'm excited about today's art inspired fashion post because Erté is such a special artist whose ideas and art still influence fashion. The hardest part was narrowing down an image, because Erté, who lived to be almost 100, was prolific, creating thousands of drawings, illustrations and paintings in his lifetime.

wings-of-victory

The most recognizable artist of the Art Deco period, he designed clothes, jewelry, costumes, sets for film, theater and opera, and even home decor.  Erté's real name was Roman Petrovich but he changed it to the French pronunciation of his initials to avoid bringing shame on his wealthy Russian family when he moved to Paris to work for Paul Poiret. A year later he designed the first of 200 covers he would create for Harper's Bazaar plus many other major magazines. He also designed costumes, programs, and sets featured in the Ziegfield Follies, Folies Bergere and Broadway. In 1925 Louis B. Mayer brought him to Hollywood to design sets and costumes for the silent films. Erté continued working throughout his life, designing revues, ballets, and operas, and in the 1960s with the Art Deco revival, he became popular again, branching out into limited edition prints, bronzes, and wearable art.

With SS12 drop waists already here, the embellished gold trend hitting hard for Fall 12 and the remake of The Great Gatsby opening in December, Art Deco-mania is only beginning! Erté was so prolific and influenced so many aspects of fashion that I decided to feature just the tip of the iceberg of the hommage being paid to his work this season:

My feet {before the pain set in}: wearing: J Crew Tuxedo Slingbacks running shoes, Jil Sander pants, Mary Jo Matsumoto Trestles Shopper

I hope you have been warm, well and happy--I've missed you! Last week I was in New York for work and play and it ended up being a whirlwind time, rich in friends, food and fashion. I documented a few of the fun stops along the way on Instagram, so if you follow @trustyourstyle on twitter or Instagram, you may have seen some of them.

trustyourstyleSpringinNYC

trustyourstyleSpaSurreySallyHershberger

My first morning in New York I took some time to unwind at Spa Surrey with a delicious massage before shedding my California layered tresses at Sally Hershberger Downtown. When in Sally-land one must become Sally-fied, and once James Vides {who styles the likes of Kate Winslet, Natalie Portman, Kylie Minogue, Elvis Costello and Diane Krall}  had possession of my locks, who was I to say no?

TrustYourStyle@nyc

One of the best parts of my trip was getting to meet up with friends old and new. I was able to lunch with lovely Stacey of Quintessence  at the New York outpost of one of my favorite LA restaurants. Then there were reunions with some of my oldest friends from my pre-grad school days, as many get togethers as I could squeeze in with my bff from NYU, plus meet ups with new friends like Daniela, whose gorgeous skin care line Belmondo is one of my faves.

trustyourstyleinNYC

And of course I wish I could say that all the stops for mini cupcakes, coffees, and other sweet treats that somehow ribboned their way into my experience didn't happen.  But along with the sugar high came the consumate shopping experience that only NYC affords {to say that I almost wept at the sheer beauty of Tom Ford's Madison Avenue store is an understatement!}. Fortunately I was busy trying on breathtaking couture and literally running in heels most of the trip--two exercises that don't quite count as spring training by California standards but have amazing calorie burning impact.

trumpsohospa

Finally the week ended at The Sp at Trump Soho with an intensely blissful massage at NYC's only hammams and one last sunset viewing from my living room floor-to-ceiling windows at The Trump Soho with a dear friend as we talked long into the night...

IMG_0934

And the next morning I hopped on the plane for home. On my way back, two lovely Jamaican gentlemen invited me into their card game and taught me how to play Phase 10. I won 9 out  of 10 hands before they almost booted me off the plane--hoping my lucky NYC streak continues to hold!

ON PCH is back!

Speaking of lucky--before I announce the lucky TrustYourStyle winner of the ShopBop giveaway, just wanted to mention that On PCH, after a very long hiatus is back! Today's guest is the stylish James Vides from Sally Hershberger Downtown.

AND THE SHOPBOP GIFT CARD WINNER IS:  #67  Vittoria from the beautiful things!

jeffkoons

There's probably no living artist whose work is more controversial than American artist Jeff Koons, who insists there are no hidden meanings in his work. The question over whether his work is of historical importance or just crass kitch merchandised to the art world is debated endlessly. Fueled by the great lengths taken to cultivate his personal persona by hiring an image consultant, placing advertisements in international art magazines of himself surrounded by the trappings of success, and giving interviews referring to himself in the third person, the publicity surrounding Koons built to a frenzy when he married to Italian porn star La Cicciolina, and his autobiographical "Made in Heaven" series documenting their union remains his most controversial series yet.

Known for his reproduction of mundane objects, "Balloon Dog" is an example of one of his enlarged pieces made of stainless steel with mirror finish surfaces. Equally famous for the prices his work commands--Koons' pieces have topped the world market on several occasions selling in the double digit millions. Love him or hate him, you have to admit that this guy knows how to have fun--or at least create the illusion.

Today's art-inspired fashion post is nothing if not Koons-inspired. The message this season at Miu Miu is that girls just want to have fun wearing hot pink and shiny shoes--and I have to agree!

Juggling my blooming design business with blogging and life has been challenging lately, but I think that one of things that a blog lets you do is share inspirations and ideas, so here's is what's been inspiring me this week:

trustyourstyleInspiration-1

In a sea of vibrant color, I still find myself circling back
to shimmering champagne nudes and deep inky blacks.

trustyourstyleInspiration-2

I've always been taken with the juxtaposition of menswear
with the ultra feminine aspects of fashion that I love so,
and it's making my heart sing
that the play of masculine/feminine is one of the coolest overall trends
emerging to drive the direction of the next phase of fashion.

trustyourstyleMasculinFeminin

Not to mention that if style has a heartbeat
{and it does}
my first love affair with film,
the French New Wave, is right there at the center of it all.

Why all the design fuss about The French New Wave?
According to this midcentury 1966 trailer--because it's all about sex and youth...

What about you? What images are rotating top of your mind's play list this week?

p.s.  Before I sign off for the week, I want to thank Elie at Punctuation Mark for the wonderful interview/feature about my new handbag line!
